### 🧩 What Is a Meta Description?

A meta description is the short blurb of text that appears under your page title in search engine results.

Example:

> *Shop the latest from Plain Jane. Minimalist Shopify themes designed for creatives. Mobile-first, fast, and easy to customize.*

While not a direct ranking factor, meta descriptions impact **click-through rate**, which can affect SEO over time.

### ✏️ Where to Edit Meta Descriptions in Shopify

You can set a meta description for almost any page in Shopify:

#### For Products, Collections, Pages, and Blog Posts:

1. Go to the **Shopify Admin**
2. Open **Products**, **Collections**, **Pages**, or **Blog Posts**
3. Scroll to the **Search engine listing preview**
4. Click **Edit website SEO**
5. Update the **Meta description** field
6. Click **Save**

> 💡 Keep your meta descriptions under **155 characters** so they don’t get cut off in search results.

***

#### For Your Homepage:

1. Go to **Online Store > Preferences**
2. Under **Title and meta description**, update the homepage’s meta description
3. Click **Save**

***

### ✍️ Meta Description Best Practices

* Keep it clear and concise (1–2 sentences)
* Include your main keyword or phrase naturally
* Mention a unique selling point (free shipping, handmade, eco-friendly, etc.)
* Use a call to action when relevant (Shop now, Learn more)

***

### ✅ You’re Done!

Once saved, your meta descriptions will be included in your site's HTML for Google and other search engines to read. Changes may take several days to show up in search results.

> ⚠️ Google may choose to override your meta description if it finds other content it considers more relevant.
