Plain Jane Starter includes essential page templates to build a complete e-commerce store. This guide explains what's available and how to set up each page type.
Available Page Templates
Based on the actual theme files, Plain Jane Starter includes these templates:
🛍️ Collection Page
Purpose: Product listing and browsing
Features: The collection page displays your products in a clean grid layout with sorting options (Featured, Lowest Priced, Newest First, A-Z Order). Customers can browse your product catalog and click through to individual product pages.
Setup: Create collections in Shopify Admin, add products to your collections, configure Collection Layout settings in Theme Settings, and test the sorting functionality.
📦 Product Page
Purpose: Individual product display and purchase
Features: The product page showcases individual products with image galleries, variant selection (size, color, etc.), SKU display, pricing information, product descriptions, add to cart functionality, and a related products section at the bottom.
Setup: Add products with high-quality images, write detailed product descriptions, set up variants if applicable, configure inventory tracking, and test the add to cart flow.
📋 Collection List Page
Purpose: Overview of all store collections
Features: Displays all your collections in a grid format, allowing customers to browse and navigate to specific collections.
Setup: Create multiple collections in Shopify Admin, add collection images, write collection descriptions, and organize collection order.
📄 Default Page Template
Purpose: Standard page template for custom content
Features: A basic content page template that can be used for About, FAQ, Policies, or any other custom content pages you need.
Setup: Create a page in Shopify Admin, select the default template, add your content and images, configure page SEO settings, and link from your navigation menu.
📞 Contact Page
Purpose: Customer communication and inquiries
Features: Includes a contact form with validation, customizable message area, timezone display showing your local time, and email integration through Shopify.
Setup: Create a contact page in Shopify (or use the existing one), select the "Contact" template, customize the message in the theme customizer, and configure your timezone in Clock Settings.
🔒 Password Page
Purpose: Store protection and email collection before launch
Features: Password protection interface to lock your store, email signup form for pre-launch lead collection, customizable messaging and branding, and mobile responsive design.
Setup: Enable password protection in Shopify Settings > Preferences, configure the password page design in the theme customizer, set up the email collection form, and customize messaging and colors.
👤 Customer Account Pages
Purpose: Customer account management
Features: Plain Jane Starter includes full customer account functionality with login page, registration page, account dashboard, order history, and address management.
Setup: Enable customer accounts in Shopify Settings > Checkout, configure account page settings in the theme customizer, and test the login and registration flow.
🔍 Search Page
Purpose: Product and content search functionality
Features: Displays search results when customers use the search function, shows relevant products, and includes filtering options.
Setup: The search page works automatically with Shopify's built-in search. Simply test the search functionality to ensure it returns relevant results.
🛒 Cart Page
Purpose: Full shopping cart view
Features: Displays the full shopping cart with all items, quantities, and totals. This page is used when the Cart Drawer is disabled.
Setup: The cart page works automatically. You can customize whether to use the Cart Drawer or Cart Page in Theme Settings > Cart Drawer.
🚫 404 Error Page
Purpose: Handle missing pages gracefully
Features: User-friendly error messaging, navigation back to store, and brand-consistent design.
Setup: The 404 page works automatically. You can customize the messaging if needed through the theme code.
🎁 Gift Card Page
Purpose: Display gift card information
Features: Shows gift card details and redemption information when customers receive gift cards.
Setup: Works automatically when you enable and sell gift cards through Shopify.
What's NOT Included in Starter
Plain Jane Starter does not include the following page types:
❌ Lookbook Pages - Visual product presentation pages
❌ Blog Templates - No blog post or blog listing pages
❌ About Page Template - Use the default page template instead
❌ Advanced Product Page Variants - Only one product page layout
Page Setup Best Practices
Collection Pages
Create logical collection structures that make sense for your products. Add descriptive collection descriptions with relevant keywords. Upload high-quality collection images. Configure the grid layout in Theme Settings. Test filtering and sorting functionality. Optimize for mobile browsing.
Product Pages
Add multiple high-quality product images from different angles. Write detailed, SEO-friendly product descriptions. Set up product variants (size, color, etc.) if applicable. Configure inventory tracking. Test the add to cart flow thoroughly. Optimize for conversions with clear calls to action.
Content Pages
Write SEO-optimized content with relevant keywords. Add relevant images to break up text. Include clear calls to action. Link to related pages and products. Test readability on mobile devices. Check loading speed and optimize images.
Contact Page
Customize the contact message to set expectations (e.g., "We respond within 24 hours"). Set your correct timezone in Clock Settings. Test the contact form submission. Verify that form submissions arrive at your email. Check that the form works on mobile devices.
Common Page Setup Issues
Collection Pages Empty
Problem: Collection page shows no products
Solutions: Add products to the collection in Shopify Admin. Ensure products are set to "Active" status. Verify that products are available in your sales channel. Check collection conditions and filters.
Product Pages Missing Information
Problem: Product page looks incomplete
Solutions: Add multiple high-quality product images. Write complete product descriptions. Set up variants if applicable. Configure inventory and pricing. Add product tags and categories.
Contact Form Not Working
Problem: Contact form submissions not arriving
Solutions: Configure email notifications in Shopify Settings. Test form submission with a real email. Check your spam folder for form submissions. Verify that all form fields are working properly.
Customer Accounts Not Available
Problem: Customers cannot create accounts
Solutions: Enable customer accounts in Shopify Settings > Checkout. Choose "Accounts are optional" or "Accounts are required". Test the registration and login flow. Verify email notifications are working.
Mobile Optimization
All templates in Plain Jane Starter are fully responsive and optimized for mobile devices. However, you should still test your pages on actual mobile devices to ensure the best experience.
Mobile Testing Checklist: Test on actual iOS and Android devices. Check loading speeds on mobile networks. Verify form functionality and input fields. Test navigation menus and dropdowns. Confirm text readability at mobile sizes. Check that images scale properly. Verify that buttons are easy to tap.
SEO Optimization
Each page template supports basic SEO optimization through Shopify's built-in tools.
SEO Setup Steps: Set unique, descriptive page titles. Write compelling meta descriptions (150-160 characters). Add descriptive alt text to all images. Use clean, descriptive URLs. Create internal links between related pages. Ensure fast page loading speeds.
SEO Best Practices: Write unique, valuable content for each page. Use keywords naturally in your content. Optimize images by compressing file sizes. Ensure mobile-friendly responsive design. Keep content fresh and updated regularly. Build backlinks from reputable sources.
Page Management Workflow
Creating New Pages
Plan your content structure and purpose. Create the page in Shopify Admin under Online Store > Pages. Select the appropriate template (default or contact). Add your content, images, and formatting. Configure SEO settings (title, description, URL). Add the page to your navigation menu. Preview and test before publishing. Publish and promote the page.
Updating Existing Pages
Back up your current content before making changes. Make your updates to content, images, or settings. Preview changes in the theme customizer. Update SEO information if content changed significantly. Test all links to ensure navigation still works. Monitor performance in analytics after publishing changes.
